Kaikki alkoi jo viime vuonna, kun oikeanpuoleinen moottori rikkoutui kevään ensimmäisillä lennoilla Vaasassa. Moottori todettiin korjauskelvottomaksi, joten sen tilalle asennettiin varamoottori. Päätimme lähettää varastoituna olleen hyväkuntoisen, moottorin peruskorjattavaksi Yhdysvaltoihin. Siellä on vielä pari korjaamoa, jotka tekevät perushuoltoja tämän ikäisille tähtimoottoreille.
Perushuolto kilpailutettiin ja moottori lähetettiin valitulle korjaamolle syksyllä 25.
Korjaamo arvioi silloin, että moottori valmistuisi maaliskuun loppuun mennessä.
Edustajamme vierailivat korjaamolla alkuvuodesta 26 ja kaikki näytti sujuvan suunnitelmien mukaan.
Kun maaliskuun lopulla korjaamo ilmoitti, että huolto viivästyy noin kuukaudella. Emme olleet vielä kovin huolestuneita, koska uskoimme, että asennukselle jää hyvin aikaa ennen lentokauden alkua.
Maaliskuu vaihtui huhtikuuksi, mutta moottorista ei kuulunut mitään. Lopulta korjaamolta tuli tieto, että työssä meneekin vielä kuukausi lisää.
Jouduimme siirtämään lentokauden aloituksen kesäkuun puolelle ja perumaan lennot juhannukseen saakka.
Lopulta moottori saapui Vaasaan vasta juhannuksen jälkeen. Peruskorjattu moottori asennettiin koneeseen ja koekäytettiin, mutta tällöin havaittiin, että potkurien säädöt eivät ole aivan kohdallaan. Jouduimme perumaan lisää lentoja, mutta arvioimme pääsevämme ilmaan heinäkuun 10. heinäkuuta.

We have had unprecedented difficulties this year the real annus horribilis.
The start of the flying season has been delayed time and time again.
It all started last year, when the right engine broke during the first flights of the spring in Vaasa. The engine was found to be beyond repair, so a spare engine was installed in its place. We decided to send the engine that was in good condition but had been stored for a long time, to the United States for overhaul. There are still a few repair shops there that perform basic maintenance on radial engines of this age.
The basic maintenance was put out to tender and the engine was sent to the selected repair shop in the fall of 26. The repair shop estimated that the engine would be completed by the end of March. Our representatives visited the repair shop at the beginning of the year, and everything seemed to be going according to plan.
At the end of March, the repair shop announced that the maintenance would be delayed by about a month. We were not too worried yet, as we believed that there would be plenty of time for the installation before the start of the flying season.
March turned into April, but there was no news about the engine. Finally, the repair shop said that the work would take another month. We had to postpone the start of the flight season to June and cancel flights until Midsummer.
The engine arrived in Vaasa in early June, when it was clear that the installation would not be possible before Midsummer. The overhauled engine was installed and tested, but it was discovered that the propeller settings were not correct. We had to cancel more flights, but we hoped to be able to take off on July 10.
Then it was discovered that the plane’s batteries had deteriorated so much during the winter that they needed to be replaced. We ordered new batteries and canceled more flights. The batteries arrived two weeks later, but tests revealed that one of them was defective. There was no other option but to order another battery – which meant another two-week wait.
A new test run, test flight and the first check flights were carried out in week 32.
The flying season will start on Saturday Aug 15th with a visit to Kymi.
